LFW Internship: Day Three

There’s early and then there’s 9am on a Sunday, but what better reason is there to be up at this ridiculous hour than to attend London Fashion Week? I decide that today is probably the best day to wear my heels as we were only scheduled for one show, and I wouldn't have to do too much standing around.

As I approach reception I'm glad to see we’re back in the same room as Day 1, “Heaven’s Reception” as one of the interns had nicknamed it due to the white minimalistic theme that runs throughout the room. Today was the Mercedes Benz Kiev Fashion Days show, which meant that instead of seeing one designers’ collection we would view different designers’ collection in one show. This show turned out to be a close second favourite of mine as I loved the designs particularly from RCR Khomenko and Yasya Minochkina).

Minochkina’s collection was undoubtedly my favourite from the whole show. I have personally always loved the trends and style from the 80/90’s and Yasya Minochkina managed to incorporate this into her collection whilst maintaining femininity throughout all of her designs. In an interview with Fashion Scout in February Yasya stated ‘I feel fashion and I do everything myself.’ This is clearly shown throughout her collection as there is a timeless elegance and class which runs throughout however it still brings an edge with the 90’s oversized clothing that is shown in many of the outfits from the collection.

The show also had an amazing soundtrack which unfortunately I'm unable share on this post as I didn't record the show on my phone, however I was able to get a decent place to take photographs of my favourite designers’ collections.

LFW Internship: Day Two.

So in terms of things going to plan day one had been a breeze. I had arrived on time, was on the list (despite missing the meeting), and there were no bitches as my fellow interns were lovely. However I was starting to realise other not so great things about being an intern, number one being the constant waiting around. As we were involved in setting up the catwalk and showing guests and visitors to their seats, interns had to be in early to help with preparation for the shows. Of course I expected this but what I didn't expect was coming in at 11 and sitting in the bag room till 1. It did become quite tedious and I found myself coming in closer to the show times in the following days, rather than the times we were asked to come in.

Nevertheless once the waiting was over we started work and on day 2 our first task was to direct visitors to the Helen Van Rees showcase. Myself and a few other interns were then asked to offer drinks to everyone once they had come in. This time I had remembered to bring my camera but of course, I had left it downstairs, I mentally kick myself as the Helen Van Rees collection is stunning and I have nothing other than my shitty Blackberry to capture it on.The concept of the showcase itself was something that I took a likening to and as much as I love the catwalk shows it was nice to be around something new and different. During the showcase the models were placed in various parts of the room as visitors were given the chance to see the collection up close, take pictures and also speak to the designer herself. I'm not one for regrets but if I did have any that day it was not speaking to Helen whilst I had the chance. After doing a little research on the designer I discovered she recently graduated from Central Saint Martins, a university that I am considering studying at. Through her designs it is clear to see she has a bright future and is a very talented lady!

The showcase lasted for about 2 hours and as it came to an end all the interns went off to lunch. We had a very big break until the next show so I decided to go to Somerset House with some of the other interns as I knew we’d spot some amazing street style, and yes, also to see if we could spot anyone famous. I did see some amazing outfits but unfortunately I didn't manage to get many pictures as it was very busy and crowded and as I was wearing heels my balance wasn't its best on the cobbled ground inside.

After a very long lunch break we returned to Freemasons Hall for our last show of the day which was the Ashley Isham collection. The routine was pretty much the same as the day before, we were in charge of seating, Priority, Seating and Standing ect. I enjoyed this show mostly due to the amazing evening dresses and the use of plastic in some of the outfits. You’ll also be glad to hear that I finally got hold of my camera, and as I was lucky enough to be quite near to the front I managed to get some decent pictures.

The crowd finally seated.

LFW Internship: Day One.

Its 10.50am and I feel like I'm sitting under one, big, giant sweaty armpit. I hate trains, but today of all days is not a day to be late so I sit tight and tell myself in 5 minutes time I’ll be walking up to Fashion Scout ready for my first day as an intern.

As I walk up to reception I make a silent prayer asking to not be welcomed with ‘I can’t see your name on the list’ or any other horrible complications that could ruin today. A friendly blonde girl asks for my name and agency and after a few moment of fiddling around with a pile of papers and separating wristbands she smiles and directs me to Room 2 Hair and Makeup. As I walk down a long empty hallway it suddenly dawns on me that I know no one and straight after this thought I'm reminded that I don’t even know what the events manager looks like, who I've been emailing all week. Think positive I tell myself, just look for a bunch of girls wearing all black, it can’t be that hard, plus for once you’re super early so you have time on your side.

I turn the corner to see a group of young girls sitting in the corridor dressed in all black, bingo! I walk up and ask ‘POP PR?’ they simultaneously reply ‘no.’ Fuck. Of course, they are interns for a different company and of course all the companies have asked their interns to wear all black, and of course none of the girls seem to know where POP PR are based. Thankfully the girls were all really helpful and one of them even walked around with me until I insisted I’d be fine and that my group was bound to be somewhere. A few moments later I'm with my POP PR group and the rest of the interns are all quite bubbly and chatty and I feel slightly more at ease. 11.30 comes, and we all sit patiently in the narrow corridor waiting for the arrival of events manager Sarah to tell us what exactly we’re doing. Several models pass, shortly followed by frantic hair and makeup artists running up and down, eventually an hour or so later we’re greeted by Sarah and she takes us to first floor for our first show ‘Ones to Watch’.

We enter a white, bright room with a long catwalk filled with photographers setting up their cameras and tripods. Interns from a different company are filling the rows with goody bags, and right at the back of the catwalk the DJ begins to set up. Looking at the rest of the interns my first thought is ‘definitely should’ve worn heels’ shortly followed by ‘of all days to forget my camera’. Time passes, and the photographers have finally set up. The lights are dimmed and rehearsals for the models begin, after a few run-throughs and the photographers shouting ‘a little more to the left’ followed by the models rolling their eyes once they’d turned around, we were gathered round in a circle and given our roles of seating the general public once doors were opened. Priority tickets: first two rows, Seated: last Row, the rest: standing. Seems simple enough. Before we know it the doors are swung open and crowds of people are flooding in. After moving a few people who were ‘accidentally’ sitting in priority and not seated, the room falls silent and the show begins.

early starts, late nights.

I have begun fashion week, and life as intern is.. well not exactly how I thought it would be. I was silly to think I could blog each day as it happens because I should've known I'd be way too tired after each day to come home and write about how it went. Little did I know I would be tired from doing nothing.

As it so happens I am very tired whilst writing this blog post so I've decided to make notes through each day I work at LFW and then blog about it afterwards, so stay tuned to hear the not so glamorous reality of life as a intern at London Fashion Week.

Not Long Now.

So, London Fashion Week Starts Tomorrow.

TOMORROW.

As I told you previously I am working as a intern at LFW for 5 days. The excitement that was absent yesterday has finally hit me and I haven't stopped squealing and jumping around my bedroom, I honestly cannot wait. The only negative thing is that I have alwaysss been a person who constantly worries so unfortunately I have the worst case scenarios running through my head that could occur tomorrow, but these thoughts can stay right at the back of mind. Tomorrow will be the first day of an amazing 5 day experience which I know I will never forget.

2 DAYS.

What do you write on your first blog post? How do you make yourself sound remotely interesting? And if you are successful in doing this how the hell do you keep it up? Well to be completely honest I have no idea but I have to start somewhere, I guess, so here goes...

Hi, I'm Nyomi. I'm a 17 year old student who aspires to be a fashion journalist and I will be interning at this year's London Fashion Week, which (hence the title) is in 2 days. I guess the normal thing to say is that I'm sooooo excited and that I literally cannot wait but that frankly isn't the case. I'm finding it beyond weird how I haven't been hit by excitement yet, I mean this is London Fashion Week, it's a big fucking deal but nope... nothing.

Looking back this may be due to the fact I missed the first and only meeting which outlined what exactly I would be doing at LFW and also the fact that I now know no one who is working with me/ for POP PR apart from Sarah who has been emailing me. Then again, what does she look like? God knows. Trust me, Nyomi ShootMeDeadIfShesEverOnTime Liburd to miss such an important meeting. However the PR agency surprisingly still let me be an intern at LFW so thankfully I can keep my knickers on, for now.

WARNING: Here comes the 'I've wanted to have a career in fashion since I was just a little girl' speech but seriously the moment I was accepted to intern at LFW for POP PR I honestly stood in my kitchen with my phone in my hand waiting to wake up with crap hair and morning breath, but it wasn't a dream, and I'm actually going to LFW. Fuck.

Of course I'm looking forward to it but still no excitement, hmmm maybe it'll hit me the day before.
WAIT, that's tomorrow. Shit.
